How a Carbondale Company is Changing the Way Women Look and Feel When They Ride

Shredly Founder Ashley Rankin

This past spring a friend was in Grand Junction riding the lunch loops. She sent me a picture from a bike shop. Her message said, “You should test these Shredly bike shorts!” They were so unique I looked into it further and found out that Shredly is a Colorado mountain bike apparel company, founded by a Colorado native and made in the U.S.A. This was enough to peak my interest so I contacted the founder Ashley Rankin and asked her a few questions about her business, how she got started and what she’d liked to see for the future of her clothing company.

It all started when Ashley wanted some new mountain bike shorts and after a few seasons of not finding what she wanted (everything was black and boring), her idea of creating her own company started percolating. In the meantime, Ashley wore board shorts with a chamois. And then after receiving lots of compliments she took it one step further. She embroidered her Shredly logo on her board shorts. From there it was a matter of finding fabrics, a pattern maker and a production manager. When Ashley talks about the two women who fill these roles, you can hear the emotion. They are her mentors and her extended family. When one cries, they all cry. And speaking of crying, having a great idea and great fabric and a great team are all fine but who is going to pay for it all?

Ashley used which is a crowd funding website for creative projects. Shredly raised over $25,000 from just 128 backers. And Ashley gives Carbondale a lot of the credit. She has had enormous grassroots support and people in town are super excited to help grow her business. And that ‘Made in the U.S.A. part? The clothing is produced in California. Because the factories are close, Ashley is able to visit them and build personal relationships with the people who make the clothing. Ashley takes a lot of pride in her work and it shows in the product. Shredly offers well made shorts and jerseys, with multiple designs for each. The jerseys are the only thing that is mostly black. The shorts are all super colorful and full of unique design work that I bet you won’t find anywhere else.

Shredly offers high performance and fashionable mountain bike clothing but Ashley’s intention is that you’ll wear it for more than mountain biking. The clothing (minus the chamois) is multi-functional and perfect for stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, yoga, hiking, golfing, etc. It’s a bonus that you can buy the shorts and jerseys to shred on your bike and that you can also wear it for other sports. Ashley says, “Women are rad and there’s no reason why they can’t look good and feel good when they’re screaming through the trees, hammering out a long climb, or tearing up a downhill section.” I couldn’t agree more. Leave it to a woman to think of everything for us.
