Amanda Siedem, 19, to be ticketed for careless driving

A Longmont bicyclist was seriously injured this morning after police said a 19-year-old woman driving home from working an overnight shift apparently fell asleep at the wheel and hit him on Airport Road.

The accident occurred around 6:49 a.m. today on Airport Road near Clover Basin Drive in southwest Longmont, according to Longmont police Cmdr. Jeff Satur.

The driver, Amanda Siedem, of Longmont, was driving a 2002 Acura MDX south on Airport Road when police say she fell asleep behind the wheel and hit the 50-year-old cyclist. The cyclist sustained a serious but non-life-threatening injury to his clavicle, and was transported to Longmont United Hospital, Satur said.

Boulder Law Enforcement is Out Of Whack!

A 'careless driving' ticket for almost killing a cyclist? Depends on if/how it is prosecuted, and what the final charge will be if/when (as I expect, based on recent car-on-bike violence) the driver cops a sweet walkaway plea, but that does not seem like enough.

Meanwhile, Boulder County Sheriff systematically harasses cyclists for the made-up offense of not unclipping and touching down at a lightly-trafficked rural stop sign with excellent visibility in all directions.

And I have never even heard of any Boulder-area law enforcement ticketing a driver for passing inside 3' (which this driver so obviously violated). Has anyone?

With all the cyclists in this area, there really is something out of balance in the attitudes and priorities of law enforcement in Boulder County.
