Kefalas Makes Bike Safety a Priority for Kids
(Denver) - Rep. John Kefalas (D-Fort Collins) wants Colorado’s kids to be safer on their bicycles. House Bill 1147 educates children on bike and pedestrian safety and requires them to wear a helmet when riding their bikes. The bill passed in the House Transportation Committee with a 7-2 vote today.
HB 1147 states that requiring minors to wear helmets while riding their bikes will significantly decrease the number of bicycled-related injuries, specifically traumatic brain injuries. Studies have shown that children ages 5-14 have the highest rate of bicycle-related hospital admissions, with nearly a third of these children suffering from brain injuries.
The bill would also bring an educational curriculum to schools to inform students of bicycle and pedestrian safety.
