During his 35 years in Boulder County, Doug Emerson claims to have seen at least eight legitimate efforts to produce an outdoor velodrome form, only to disband. And he’s convinced his Boulder Valley Velodrome project — slated for construction along County Line Road in Erie, just south of St. Luke’s Orthodox Church — won’t make it nine.
“This is the real deal. This is going to happen,” said Emerson, owner of University Bikes in Boulder, who along with his business partner, Frank Banta, is spearheading the project. “This region is so ripe for a velodrome.
“Boulder County is like a Hawaiian island with no surf beach and we’re building the first surf beach,” he added. “It’s going to be that popular.”
