Assault on Pikes Peak
Submitted by David on

There are sixty six 14ers in the Continental US and fifty four of those are in Colorado, but amazingly enough only one has allowed you to ride a bike to the top - until this year.
Most everyone knows of the Bob Cook Memorial - Mt Evans Hill Climb but this year you have the opportunity to ride to the top of Pikes Peak. The new event is called Assault on the Peak.
We were contacted about this event a couple weeks ago and the buzz continues to grow. I just saw an article in the The Gazzette that gave a little more information.
From the article:
There are other races to the top of the peak, including the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon – on foot – and the Pikes Peak Hill Climb – in vehicles. But there has not been a bicycle race since the early 2000s, when the Pikes Peak Mountain Bike Challenge, a race on the upper few miles of the highway, ended.
I think this event could sell out as fast as the Triple Bypass, Leadville 100 MTB Race and the Growler. So set a reminder in your calendar for April 1st when registration opens.

There used to be a race up the hill, from about half way up. It was a great race. Extremely challenging. It takes a major effort for such an event to happen. I'm surprised it returned.

You're correct, Jose, but

You're correct, Jose, but this event isn't classified as a race. It's an all inclusive open fun ride... but, yes will still be extremely challenging. The race you mentioned did start about 2/3 of the way to the summit past the reservoir, so the Assault on the Peak is the first opportunity riders will have had to ascend the entire highway from toll gate to summit!
