Advocates question penalties in bike-vs-car crashes

Two drivers issued traffic tickets this month after fatal or life-threatening accidents

After two drivers involved in serious accidents with Boulder bicyclists were issued traffic citations this month, some cycling advocates say the punishment in such cases is too light.

Others say state law doesn't offer prosecutors enough charging options to send a stronger message to drivers and better protect those on their bikes.

For his role in a collision in Fort Collins that killed Boulder resident Jim Fogelberg, 64, Bradley Hansen was ticketed by Fort Collins police earlier this month. Hansen, 50, was cited with failing to yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic when making a left turn.
