AMERICAN CYCLING ASSOCIATION (ACA) 2011 Proposed Rule Changes

We were just made aware of the following potential rule change for 2011. I personally enjoy racing cyclocross in Colorado in September. I dont know if we need to start the weekend after Labor Day but I love racing cyclocross in warm weather or cold weather. The ACA did make changes this year with the Colorado Cross Cup and part of the rules were there would be no Cross Cup races in September. My feeling is if you dont want to race in September, dont and you can still be competitive in the Cross Cup series.

Item 9. Permit Fees – Cyclocross Permits
Add Racing Rule 5.4.10

Cyclocross events shall not be permitted before the first of October.

Pro:

  • There is no consistency between our cyclocross calendar and the rest of the world.
  • If we want to prepare our riders to be competitive on the national and world stage we need to adjust our calendar to help them.
  • The weather in Colorado in September is much too hot to have safe racing. We had people being treated for heat exhaustion and dehydration at our race (GMSV) on Sept. 19.
  • If we are looking towards a calendar in which Nationals are in January having races so early makes it difficult for people to peak for the big races later in the season.
  • If the ACA board isn't willing the sanction Colorado Cup races in September that should be a clear message that the board would like to move the calendar farther into the fall.
  • Starting later might give some promoters more time to adequately prepare courses.
  • It would give riders who want to race the road and cross more time for a break and to prepare for both seasons. It might possibly alleviate some of the problems with promoters falling all over themselves to hold their races early in the season.
  • In conversation with other riders and promoters I've gotten a lot of positive response for this idea.

Con:

  • Members enjoy racing cross in September. Participation numbers reinforce this. The UCI cross calendar(s) start the second weekend in September.

To Hot?

If that is true then how do the road cyclist handle the summer heat? Boy that really makes CX racers sound like a bunch of pansies

However I agree with the break thing... IF you are a road cyclist who wants to blow into the CX season HOWEVER now that they no longer do BAR/BAT in September then it's not a big deal.

Still, how do the those road cyclist deal with the summer heat? It must be so dangerous for them.

This is crazy talk

The most popular and fastest growing cycling sport and we are trying to shorten the season. I say heck no! Some of use live to cross and plan our whole year around it. I would like to see it become like road and have a five or even six months of racing. Having the points series from Oct-Jan in fine but we should not be shorten the season but lengthening it. Lets be vocal about this and support cross.

If anything, we need more, more, more.

Obviously, Cross is hot these days. If you don't wanna race in Sept, then as Yoda says, 'do not'.

If anything, I think the calendar would benefit from a few CX races in the spring and sprinkled through the summer. They cost less to promote and are a hell of a lot more fun than paved crits and deer trail.

Free markets FTW

Summer cross races? What a

Summer cross races? What a great idea. No wait we already have that in September and October in CO.

I look forward to golf tournaments in Jan and ski racing in August. Maybe a 85 mile rooa race on December 1st too? Maybe we can get the Rockies to play a few games in Feb too?

•There is no consistency between our cyclocross calendar and the rest of the world.(I go to Nationals)
•If we(you, ACA, other riders) want to prepare our riders (namely me) to be competitive on the national and world stage(worlds?, really? you ain't gene palumbo, dude) we need to adjust our calendar to help them.
•The weather in Colorado in September is much too hot(horrors! this point is adequately covered by so many others in this thread) to have safe racing(what is safe racing? your mom out there with an IV bag at the ready?). We had people being treated for heat exhaustion and dehydration at our race (GMSV) on Sept. 19(watch any worlds tri in Kona, that is truly hot and wrong...oh, and 'wah-wah')
•If we are looking towards a calendar in which Nationals are in January having races so early makes it difficult for people to peak for the big races later in the season.(now I'm really getting bored...make your own peaks, for c-sakes!)
•If the ACA board isn't willing (to) sanction Colorado Cup races in September that should be a clear message that the board would like to move the calendar farther into the fall. (doesn't ACA have bigger fish to fry? uh, yeah)
•Starting later might give some promoters more time to adequately prepare courses.(more boredom....we're losing attention!)
•It would give riders who want to race the road and cross more time for a break (to burn out more, lose more fitness) and to prepare for both seasons. It might possibly alleviate some of the problems with promoters falling all over themselves to hold their races early in the season. (where has this been a complaint? zero evidence in print)
•In conversation with other riders(some guys at the bar) and promoters(who? exactly) I've gotten a lot of positive response for this idea.(people nodding while you talk about a plan that benefits you is not positive feedback, they want you to finish without offending you)

What?

A few points,
First; the way your proposal is worded, that means no cross racing in January or February, as on every calendar that i have seen, January is before October. Yes, the "season" goes thru February, but the rule states nothing before October.
Second; starting before others is a good thing! Colorado racers will have a few more races under their belt.
Third; if you don't want to race in September, then DON'T!!! Don't try to make everyone bend to your wishes.
This really is a dumb idea.
