LONGMONT, CO – Safe Routes to School will offer free “rodeo” for kids aged 4-11 years old to encourage safe bicycling handling skills. Riding a bicycle safely is not just about balancing on two wheels! A bicycle rodeo consists of various activities that are designed to provide fun for kids while teaching safe bike handling skills that can be transferred onto the bike path or the road. The bicycle rodeo is conducted in a contained environment and kids can participate in just one activity or all ten. Kids will learn how to most efficiently start and stop their bicycles (especially helpful in getting across a street with a traffic light), adjusting their helmet, dodging “rocks” or any debris on the road while maintaining their balance, quick and simple bike maintenance “checks,” riding predictably, and much more! They will learn about what “fuels” their bike/their body, some of the many things that they will need to watch out for while pedaling, whether on the path, on the trail or in their own driveway. And much more. Kids must bring their own bike and wear a helmet. Helmets will be available for kids who do not own one, and a limited number may be available to take home as well (details provided on site).
