2012 - Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb
Location: Cascade, CO
Description: The Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb (formerly known as Assault on the Peak) will provide cycling enthusiasts and USA Cycling racers the opportunity to ascend America’s most famous mountain using the same course that the automobiles utilize. The 19.9 km route is incredibly challenging ascending over 4,700 vertical feet and includes over 154 turns on the course up to Pikes Peak summit at 14,115-feet.
The Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb will include a USA Cycling Race open to licensed USA Cycling racers as well as the Fun Ride open to all. The race will include a total prize list of more than $4,000 and features a Pro, Cat 1-2 event for both Men and Women. The Fun Ride will also be sanctioned by USA Cycling and will again be a supported, non-competitive fun ride. Participants will be given an official finishing time, enjoy rest stops and all official finishers will receive a medal.

Would do it for the ride back down

I would really like to do this just for the ride back down. Anyone want to race back down with a gentlemans bet winner takes all!
But then I read the fun ride starts 30mins before the real racing. I must say passing all those gappers not keeping to their line as racers go by at 3-5X their speed isn't going to pretty. There will be rest stops set up. Really WTF.

We did a recon in May with Michael Creed and LeRoy Popowski and though they didn't PUSH it they rode pretty steady and made the Summit in 1hr. 40 min. That means they were averaging around 8 mph. So though the Pros may be passing people at TWICE the speed it shouldn't be that difficult on either group. There will be one place set up for a water break and there is plenty of room for riders to stay off the road. I think you will be surprised that most of the Citizen's / Fun Ride participants will be very respectful of the racers and in fact are excited about the prospect of sharing the road.
On another note. The Cog Railroad was reopened to the top of Pikes Peak today so we are hoping that Highway 24 opens early next week. Positive signs for our area.

Did anyone give you trouble

Did anyone give you trouble on your recon ride? I'd like to test the road before the race, but don't want to make the trip down to COSprings if bikes are not allowed.

I think the recon ride was sanctioned -- normally you will not be able to ride up the road. I think you would get turned away if you tried...

Drive a few miles up, get your bike out and ride while your buddy drives to the top, drive down...repeat. It works.

Hotels in Manitou Springs at the base of Pikes Peak will be $100+/- at the height of tourist season.
This is a very expensive race.

Just get up early and drive down, many of us do that with early start times for the Boulder events, what it takes to race these days if you are on a budget like myself.
Plenty of Hotels around the springs

There are plenty of hotels Super 8 to Broadmore in the Springs. You should be able to find one to fit your budget. But yes most of us get up early to make a lot of the races in the Boulder area.
Fun Ride NOT open to ALL

You note in your article that the Fun Ride is open to ALL.....this is NOT true, my husband and son wanted to do the Fun Ride but it is only open to 19yrs and older, my son is only 15yrs old, so he had to enter into the race just to ride.....whats up with that??
Fabulous

I second that. Great event.

I second that. Great event. Hopefully all of the amazing new hill climbs (Guanella, Cottonwood, Pikes) return next year!
Agreed. It's a great ride.

Agreed. It's a great ride. Since it's your only chance to ride Pikes, it's well worth entering the race. The descent is vastly better than the endless bumps you get descending Evans. It's a tough climb, but there are a few places to catch your breath.
