If fire danger remains extremely high in late August when the USA Pro Cycling Challenge's much-anticipated sixth stage passes through Boulder, city officials acknowledge they could be forced to move the race finish off Flagstaff Mountain.

Boulder spokeswoman Sarah Huntley said fire and emergency officials are continuing to work on a response plan for a variety of emergency situations, and part of that planning includes monitoring conditions and evaluating fire risk.

It would be a real disappointment if the Flagstaff section was cancelled, as this ranks high along side the USAPCC Queen stage or even Alp D'Huez in France. This was also a major uphill time trial for the Coors Classic. The climb is iconic route for Boulder. A good alternative might be Table Mesa Drive to NCAR. Tree density is much less (reduced fire hazard), extremely scenic (especially from the NBC sports helicopter) and a large parking lot on top for the finish line, bleachers, spectators, etc.
