2011 - ACA Colorado Cross Cup

ACA - COLORADO CROSS CUP

Last year was the first year for the Colorado Cross Cup (CCC). It replaced the Best Cyclocross Racer and Best Cyclocross Team competition. There was quite a bit of talk the end of last season about potential changes to the CCC for 2011. The changes have just been release and here are a few of the note worthy changes.

Changes for 2011

  • Call-up procedures for non-CCC races will be done by results on crossresults.com
  • Start times have slightly changed from last year.
  • New categories have been added. The big one is the Mens 35+/3s which will start right after the Mens 35 Open.

It's not just the new category

It's not just the new category, it's the trend as well. We have added at least 3 new categories in the last 5 years (35+cat4, 45+cat4, and 35+cat3). Where does it end? When will everyone be happy that they can move to the next group and satisfy the omnipresent sandbagging cry? We have an upgrade and category ladder, but for christ's sakes, how many rungs do we need on the ladder? It's like pandora's box, once we decided to add a rung to the ladder, now everyone wants a new rung added to make their climb easier, and guess what, bike racing isn't supposed to be easy.
I would also like to see some numbers that prove that 35+ cat 3 is helping attendance and the growth of the sport.

So what

who cares, how does it hurt YOUR racing or experience? You will kick the some ass and get your ass kicked! Same oh same oh, if the economics support "rungs" so be it, if it does not the "rungs" will go away, and you might be happy again, i am with the person who thinks you need to shut er up, hope you are able to sleep

You're right

Yes, let's let the economics decide. It was nice when you knew your category would be on the flyer for every event, and your event was a consistent length (not 5 minutes shorter every year), and the officials were not burned out from working 12+ hour days. Nobody's racing experience has been affected by the addition of all these new categories, which is why there is no interest in this topic. nighty night.... snore...

You hit the nail on the head

You hit the nail on the head man, the ACA has created this nanny state, where everyone expects to be competitive for a top 10 in every race they do. It has become a self fulfilling situation, they added these lower end cats, now we have more cats, with about the same # of riders (or even worse fewer riders), and everyone wants it easier.

It is stupid to think you will get upgraded and then be competitive in the next category, yet that is what so many people think/hope/use as a excuse to sand bag. In the old day you started as a 4, took a while then got got good and did well, got the upgrade, then probably were not a great 3 for a while, then you learned, got better, and did well as a 3. Then you got up to 2 and literally got your brains handed to you for at least a year. Then you got better again, learned to train better again and you got a top 20, then you rode in a break, then maybe a 9th. That is how things used to work. Now guys want more and more categories, so every can be top 20 and get darn BAR/BAT points.

I know it is an old school attitude, but some times where you ride your brains out and finish 32nd against a strong field, that is 100% time more satisfying then winning against some cup cakes. The new riders that have come into the ACA just do not want that. People should go race where they have 100 rider fields, we used to keep track of how we were doing based on what page of the result we were on, as in man I did great, I moved up to the 2nd page. Now a days people want the 1st page of the results to be called 35 open, the second page to be 35 3's, and the 3rd and 4th page to be 35 4's. Lovely, now 60 guys can be top 20 and get medals and ribbons.

Also as this is a cross discussion I am not aware that Michael Carter races cross. As for Mike Engleman I am not sure he has raced on the road in CO in a real long time.

Repeat

Great quote. From the days when a top 20 really meant something.
