GOLDEN, CO (January 13, 2011) On Tuesday, December 7, 2010, Jefferson County Commissioners voted two-to-one to approve the Deer Creek Challenge cycling event. This marks the event's second year, following an outpouring of support from area cyclists and community nonprofits. The 2011 cycling event is scheduled for Sunday, August 21, 2011.
Among the reasons cited by community participants and Jefferson County Commissioners were the positive financial impacts on Jefferson County's mountain communities through the event's charitable beneficiaries the Mountain Resource Center, the Pleasant Park Grange Hall and Brent?s Place. The 2010 Deer Creek Challenge contributed more than $15,000 in cash and in-kind donations to these nonprofits. Moreover, remaining food and aid station supplies were donated to area food pantries along the Highway 285 corridor. The estimated overall impact of the 2010 event was more than $100,000 to the Jefferson County community.
Event owner Pat Downing noted, ?The first-year partnerships with Jefferson County infrastructure and nonprofits were critical to making the event a success. As we move into 2011, one of our most important goals is to increase the event?s charitable impact on area communities.?
The Deer Creek Challenge features three courses 33 miles, 64 miles (metric century) and 100 miles (century). The century course features a 12,751-foot elevation gain (averaging 127 feet per mile) and technical descents, and has been embraced by the cycling community as the most challenging single-day century ride in the United States. Deer Creek Canyon?s mountainous terrain, natural beauty and metro-Denver location make the area a popular destination for Colorado?s hardy cyclists, many of whom train on portions of the course year-round. This organized ride provides safety and complete support for participants to test their stamina at the end of the cycling season.
Event registration opened on Wednesday, December 15, 2010. A $10 early registration discount will be available to cyclists to registering before January 3, 2011. Early registration prices are $85 century and $75 metric century 33-mile option. Register at deercreekchallenge.com.
